Advantages to adding a blog to your website

Do you think that blogs are only for the weird geeky guys? Do you believe that your company cannot benefit from a blog on your company website? There are many advantages to adding a blog to your website. Here are a few.
Increased Rankings
Websites and blogs are all about content. This content needs to be topical to your website and industry. It also needs to be current and fresh. Blogs help to boost the topical content of your site. The more topical content on your site; the value your site has and the more relevant your site becomes. The more new stuff you add, the more of an authority you make your site, and this helps to improve your overall search rankings. It can also help you obtain rankings for "long tailed search phrases".
Long tailed search phrases are phrases that usually exceed 3 or 4 words in length. They are specifically targeted to your particular product or service. They are also a lot less searched. Blogs are great for getting rankings on these long tailed search phrases. If you come across a long tailed search phrase that you want to rank for, use the phrase as the post title (if it makes sense to do so) and write a good, content rich post about it and your ranking potential for this phrase will rise. Remember “Content is king”
When you write blog posts that are centred around your target phrases, you can often help improve your overall rankings by increasing the relevance of the site to that search phrase. Remember to also link to other relevant pages within your site from the post.
Increased Traffic
Not only are blogs perfect for increasing your topical content, but Blogs are also great for increasing traffic. The mere fact that you have increased topical content means you will receive increased added traffic to your site. Alongside the increased traffic you may notice an improvement in the search engine ranking. Also, if your blog is interesting and topical, you will get a few repeat visitors to your site as they check back for new posts. If people really like your blog, they will spread the word, resulting in even more visitors.
Credibility
Everybody loves and respects an expert. By blogging regularly about your industry you will help to establish yourself as an expert and authority. Your current and potential customers will see your blog and notice that you know what you're talking about and be more likely to make use of your services. Knowledge is power. People like free give-aways. By sharing your knowledge and giving it away freely it will instil trust into your visitors which can actually result in increased conversions. There are a lot of faceless, anonymous, impersonal websites out there - an active blog can help people relate to you and trust you.
Links
Links help increase search engine rank. It also helps in the credibility and authority arena. A good, well written blog can result in free one way links to your site. Sometimes it is as simple as a fan adding your link to their blog roll, and other times it may be RSS working its magic. Adding a link or two into your posts to direct visitors and readers to other relevant pages on your website also adds authority and credibility as well as some “link juice” to your site and blog page. If anyone then republishes or syndicates your posts on their sites, you will also end up with a relevant back link.
A blog is not a magic rocket to boost your inbound link counts, but it can certainly help.
Conclusion
Adding a blog is not some magical formula to increase traffic to your website and subsequently increase sales from your website. It is but one of many factors involved. But I believe it is one of the more important ones and also the more affective ones. It is relatively easy to implement, and has huge benefits.

I can vouch for this. I have a real estate business which has benefited hugely from the blog we set up last year. It's attracting all kinds of traffic we would never have seen with the traditional property type website we run.

I have a Business Directory and although the numbers were great needed more to attract potential investors. I added a blog and HELLO! I have so many visitors a day I moved the blog to a new domain so I can manage it as a separate entity! The Blog directs more visitors to my Directory than Google!

Excellent post! I use my road safety website more for "timesless" content, whilst the road safety blog can provide commentary on daily news stories and direct people to the "timeless" suggestions and advice on the website!
