X-FactorThe X Factor is a British television singing competition, contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. The X Factor was devised as a replacement for the highly successful Pop Idol. The show has proved hugely popular with audiences, with the series 5 final attracting 14.5 million UK viewers.

The X Factor is largely the baby and brainchild of Simon Cowell who wanted to launch a show that he owned the television rights to.

What is the X Factor?

Besides being a Pop Idol successor and a music reality show, X Factor is more than that. Simon Cowell originally used the term on Pop Idols, but he was not the originator of it.

X-Factor in very general term means the unknown factor or the unexplainable thing which adds a certain value to that object, element or a person.

From Dictionary.com: a hard-to-describe influence or quality; an important element with unknown consequences; also written X-factor.

The etymology of the term “X Factor” dates back to 1934.

Does your blog have the X Factor?

The reason for this post is not to get you to all of a sudden start following The X Factor Television series or transform your blog into an X Factor wannabe.

If you actually look at the meaning of the word, then the question asked is; Does your blog have something that is unexplainable and adds great value to your blog?

Years ago one might have gotten away with an average mediocre blog. But today there are just so many bloggers, writing about everything under the sun, your blog has to compete with thousands and thousands of others. What makes your blog stand out from the rest?

With so many blogs writing about the exact same thing, your blog has to have that X Factor to survive and make it to the top.

How to X Factor your blog?

So we agree that in order to succeed and make it to the top your blog has to have something unexplained that will add great value. So where can I add great value to my blog you might ask?

Visual Presentation – You blog needs to stand out from the rest. It needs to be different and appealing. This does not mean that it needs to be full and busy, simple can and often does do the job. Change your theme, change your colours, change the look and feel, change the navigation. Your blog has to grab the attention of your readers and keep them there. Put the X Factor back into your blog’s visual presentation.

Compelling Content – Write compelling content. Write extra-ordinary content. Write content that changes peoples lives, causes them to laugh or cry. It needs to pull at the heart of your readers, challenge their intellect and stir the emotions. Content is King. Put some of that X Factor into your content.

Scintillating Titles. – So many people forget the power and importance of a really good and effective headline or blog title.. Your headline needs to be attractive, eye catching and enticing. An effective and well written headline sells newspapers and magazines, why should it not be any different for blog. Your blog headline needs to have that X Factor about it.

Compelling Topics – Don’t make your blog dreary and just another run of the mill blog that any Tom, Dick or Sally can write. You have to choose compelling and engaging topics to write about. Perhaps topics that others are afraid to tackle. Perhaps take a different or opposing view point that others are writing about
