I was reading Mikecj’s blog the other day where he makes some outrageous predictions for the next 10 years. One of the things he boldly predicts is the end of newspapers as we know it. In his post, Discussion – The next decade, he makes mention of print media ceasing to exist and that eBooks (Kindle etc.) will outsell traditional media.

I thought this was preposterous, and a bit far fetched. But then I had to rethink as I came across this news:

“Live. Work. QUE. More than eReader, QUE is uniquely designed as an essential tool to lighten the workload of mobile professionals. Sleek new industrial design, intuitive user interface, and powerful features define a premium business reading experience. | 7 Jan 2010”

Plastic Logics Que plans to challenge the likes of Kindle and the Sony eBook Reader. It boast to be the first to have a plastic flexible touch screen. Unlike the LED glass displays used in other eReaders, the Que is rugged and glare-free.

Despite its hefty price tag of up to $800 (R5900), the device – which is available only in the US for the time being – garnered positive reviews. One website called it the "slickest and most versatile" e-reader.

“QUE's crisp, clear screen looks and reads…just like paper. Even in direct sunlight. And at 8-1/2" x 11", the largest in the industry, it let's you read that business report the way it was meant to be. No squinting, no eye-strain”, another website put it.

One thing that is noticeable is how thin the Que is.

A tidal wave of next-generation eBook readers is being unleashed. Following the success of Amazon's Kindle, which sold an estimated 500,000 units worldwide in 2009, a slew of companies of all sizes are trying to push traditional publishers towards the eBook revolution.

Does this spell the beginning of the end for traditional print media? We wait and see.

What a time for bloggers and readers alike to get into eBook publishing. Who knows, someone could be reading your eBook on the Que, or another eBook reader soon.
