Do you actually make any money out of ads

Many bloggers started out with the grand idea that they could make a ton of money out of their blogs. Thinking that placing a number of ads on their blogs would bring in some sustainable amounts of cash. But only to be hit a few months later with the reality that this is not so.
The A-listers
Many of the blogs that advocate that you can make tons of money, come from the so called A-listers. These are blogs that get well over 100 000 page views per month. Some in the region of 500 000 – 1 000 000 page views per month.
It’s no wonder that they can say that you can make sustainable amounts of money from advertising on your blog.
For me, I have found that the pipe dream of making tons of money is just that, a pipe dream.
With 10 000 – 15 000 page views a month I am no where near the league of the A-listers. Someday I hope to be. As a result my ad-network ads do not bring in any substantial amounts of money.
Dedicated ads
It seems to me that the only way one might make any substantial amounts of money, not large amounts to retire on, is to solicit dedicated ads separate from any ad network like Google ads.
But the difficulty here is actually convincing companies that your site or blog is worth their while to advertise on. They have to see some return on investment.
I’m not a salesman, so convincing companies is a very difficult job for me. I haven't had much success in this department lately.
Your thoughts
Having said all that, I would like to know your thoughts and experiences with regards to on site advertising. What networks do you use? Is it worth while? Are you making anything substantial, or is it just peanuts?
Are you using ads on your blog at all? If so which ones are working for you?
What are your thoughts on ads? Do you think it adds any value to a blog? Do you find that the ads on your blog might just be a distraction? eating up valuable bandwidth and download time.

Basically, I follow this procedure in order to land direct deals with sponsors:
a - Run a blog with highly targeted content. b - Run Adsense. c - Contact Adsense sponsors directly, or contact their competitors. d - Show them my stats. Give them some free trial time. Tell them their competitors are already advertising on my site through Adsense. Whatever combination feels suitable.
This has worked for me so far. Of course, it takes time, and effort.
