The English language is a very strange one. With 616,500 entries in the Oxford English Dictionary, I’d say that there are a few words you and I do not know.
Many people have only on average about 50 000 words in their vocabulary. A lot you say. But compared to the Oxford English dictionary entries, that equates to only about 8%.
So how many words do you know. Rather how many do you not know.
What you don’t want to happen is to be known by or described by some of the words listed below.
- abecedarian - A person who is learning the alphabet
- adoxography - Skilled writing on an unimportant subject
- aeolist - A pompous windy bore who pretends to have inspiration
- autohagiographer - One who speaks or writes in a smug fashion about their own life and accomplishments
- autolatry - The worship of one's self
- floccinaucinihilipilification - The categorising of something that is useless or trivial
- hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian - Pertaining to extremely long words
- inaniloquent - Speaking foolishly or saying silly things
- maledicent - One who is addicted to abusive speech
- philosophunculist - One who pretends to know more than they do to impress others
- sphallolalia - Flirtatious talk that leads nowhere
- ultracrepidarian - Of one who speaks or offers opinions on matters beyond their knowledge
- Nihilarian - A person who deals with things lacking importance
- Agrestic - Someone who is rude, uncouth and uncultured.
