Do you have web or mobile application ideas but cannot get them off the ground? Are you a developer with a great idea but lack funding and don’t understand the business process?
Perhaps you have the business and marketing skills, you have an idea for a great web or mobile application, but you suck at writing code?
Well your life is about to change! You can pitch your ideas, form a team and get that business application published to the web or mobile device.
Microsoft and various partners are supporting what is called a “Startup Weekend”. Startup Weekend is a global network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. These individuals come together to share ideas, form teams, and launch startups within the space of 54 hours.
What is a “Startup Weekend”?
Startup Weekends are weekend-long, hands-on experiences where entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs can find out if startup ideas are viable. On average, half of Startup Weekend’s attendees have technical backgrounds, the other half have business backgrounds
Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts. – Startup Weekend.org
Global event
Startup weekend is a global event. Already there have been 325 events completed around the world. Another 70 planned. An amazing 27000 entrepreneurs have created 2 450 startups.

Calling all Joburgers’
Startup Weekend started in South Africa in the mother city, Cape Town. From what I have read it was a blast, a great success.
The Cape Town Startup Weekend this last weekend was an absolute success, so we’ll be hoping to do even better in Joburg this weekend.
