During the Mobile Phone Conference Microsoft announced that there will be no upgrade to Windows Phone 8 for any Windows Phone 7.x device.
When Windows Phone 8 debuts later this year. It will feature a few new cool apps, a new start screen, new hardware support.
Things like:
- New camera app
- Internet Explorer 10
- Near-field communication
- Nokia Maps
- Direct X support for advanced gaming
- Bigger Sharper Screens with new screen resolution support
- More Flexible storage. MicroSD card support
- Multicore processor support.
All great for the new OS, but bad news for current Windows Phone 7 owners/users.
Current Windows Phone 7 users will be left out in the cold for most of these features, including recent buyers of Nokia's Lumia 900 handset.
So if you are planning to buy a new Windows handset, hold on a few months till Windows 8 Ships.
From the Windows Phone Blog:
Some of you have been wondering, “Will we also get Windows Phone 8 as an update?” The answer, unfortunately, is no.
Apparently it’s all because of stats. That is, other OS-Device pairs never offer upgrades either so why should Microsoft.
"Statistically speaking, no Android phone gets upgraded," Myerson said during the meeting. "None. Ever. They have big bugs that don't even get patched. That's what we're seeing statistically out there. In the case of Apple, they ship OS updates to hardware that makes it unusable. It's a great hardware sales tool, as far as I can tell. Install an OS that makes your hardware unusably slow so you feel compelled to go back to the store and buy a new piece of hardware." – TomsGuide.com
But it’s not all doom and gloom. There will be a Windows Phone7.x upgrade to give Windows Phone 7 the look and feel of Windows Phone 8. It’s called Windows Phone 7.8.
mmm Just doesn’t make me feel that good. Kinda like the booby prize.
Anyway, here is a sneak peak of Windows Phone 8 (AKA Windows Phone 7.8 for WP7 devices). Including a short video thanks to Windows Phone Blog.
What are your thoughts? Is this a good move by Microsoft? Have they shot themselves in the foot by not providing upgrades? Would you holf off buying that new phone until WP8 arives, or change and go for either Android or iOS?
Let us know what you think in the comments below. Waiting to read what you have to say.
