A successful website is all about traffic. Traffic turns into customers. IF you have no traffic you do not stand a chance of getting customers via your website. Yesterday our site broke the 70 000 Alexa ranking. To some this might seem trivial. But to me it is great.
I have always been torn between the importance of Pagerank and Alexa Traffic rank. Page rank is Google's vote on how important users see your site. You can still have a high page rank, but very low traffic. Why is this? well because page rank is primarily calculated on inbound links. You can have 5000 inbound links, but those inbound links are not guaranteed traffic.
With Alexa, they try to gauge your sites importance by actual usage. Traffic is the amount of visitors and page views your site receives. To me this is more important. However, I do not discount the importance of PageRank. To get both to the highest point that your site can achieve is a goal that every webmaster and website owner should strive towards.
I achieved this mild stone, at least I think it is, with only three months of hard work. I could have done a lot more, but there are other things that I am involved in. There have been some sites that have gotten better traffic ranking than mine in less time. But I guess its how you promote and advertise your site.
The big thing now is how do we go go higher in Alexa traffic rank, and increase Pagerank. It's no good just reaching a high traffic rank, for one day or one week, but to then sjy-dive back to the 13000000 mark. The hard part now is to keep up the ranking and then get better.
My goal is to become the best and most visited technological, website in South Africa. Ok, maybe that's ambitious, but if we do not aim hi we will not achieve high.
How did I get there? Well I think think things changed when I did a few things three months ago:
- Changed the website design. The design had to look more professional, and business like. Simple but effective.
- More active in blogging. I started to try and post three blogs a day.
- Social Network Marketing. Started marketing on various social networks. I could still do more, and I will. But things like Facebook, LinkedIn definitely helped. Even South African Muti has brought traffic to my site.
- Micro-blogging. Twitter is very important. Many people shove twitter into the basement and do not understand the power it has.
- Quality Content. One thing that will surely drive people away is lack of good content on a regular basis.
- Monitor and analyse. I checked stats everyday to see what people were reading on my site. Then tried to supply more of that.
I would like to thank all of you who participated in my site in some form or other. Please keep supporting this effort. I will do my best to supply good quality material. I also realise that I have a long long way to go, and with your help will surely get there.
Here is to the next three months. Sub 10 000 on Alexa and sub 500 for Alexa ranking South Africa.
