10 Blogging Myths

Alien_Myth Blogs and blogging have grown exponentially in the last few years. When something like this happens it is inevitable that some bloggers will usurp their authority.

While there is certainly a lot of good advice out there, there is also a lot of bad advice.

Here are my top ten blogging myths or bad advice.

Myth # 1: Blogging is easy. Blogging is not easy, especially if you want to do it correctly. You’ve got research, replying to comments, finding good content. So many things to do. It’s not just about putting a  few words together on a website.

Myth # 2: Blogging will make you rich. While this is partly true, for the most part many bloggers will not see enough money to even support the hosting costs of their blog. So if you’re trying to blog for money then you’ve got your work cut out for you.

Myth # 3: You can’t blog if you can’t write. I’m dyslexic, I nearly failed English at school, yet I love blogging, and my blog is not doing that badly. The fact of the matter is, if you have a story to tell, if you have information to share, you can blog.

Myth # 4: I can do it alone. No man is an island. In fact no Blog is an Island. You and I need the help of our friends and colleagues to help grow and promote our blog. Don’t discount your readers, don’t turn a blind eye to your social friends.

Myth # 5: Not everyone can blog. Like myth no 3 if you have a story to tell, if you have knowledge on a particular topic, or if you just have an opinion, then you can blog about that. Anyone and everyone can blog. It’s writing down your thoughts in a way that others will enjoy reading them.

Myth #6: Customers don’t read blogs. If this is what you think, then you have been hiding your head in the sand. A blog like any website can be indexed and searched by Google. Clients and customers use the search engines to find products, get information, compare items, gain knowledge, look for information. What better way to teach and encourage your clients than through your blog.

Myth #7: More traffic equals more money. While this might sound logical, and probably is, the problem is the numbers. In order to make enough money via online ads, which depend on traffic, you need large amounts of traffic. In the region of 10 000+ users a day. Not many blogs realise that volume of traffic. It is more effective to look at concrete products linked to your blog to make money online.

Myth #8: Concentrating on SEO will get me higher rankings: SEO alone will NOT get you ranked higher on the search engines. In fact there is a possibility where you can over SEO your website or blog and actually fall in rankings. Yes SEO is important, but it is but one of many other factors.  Natural quality content is by far more important, and you get the added benefit of natural SEO.

Myth #9: You’re not A-list blogging material. When you start out blogging with a deflated attitude then its no wonder your blog fails. I believe I am the best blogger in the country. No one comes near. If you have the same belief, it will show in your writing, and you will see your blog with different eyes. So will your readers.

Myth #10: Blogging is not fun. If you believe this then my suggestion to you is to give up blogging now. If you can’t have fun and enjoy what you do why do it at all? You have to have fun and enjoy your blog, enjoy your readers, enjoy reading other blogs.

Are there any myths that I might have missed. Let’s hear your thoughts on the matter. Please add your top myth to the comments below and lets compare notes.
